Main research topics
The Institute of Chemical Engineering (IChE) is the principal national research centre for chemical engineering and bioengineering science. IChE is engaged both in fundamental and applied research.
The fundamental research projects deal with the studies on the principles of momentum, heat and mass transfer, chemical thermodynamics and macrokinetic phenomena in the chemical and biochemical industries.
The profound knowledge of the nature of these processes is a major prerequisite for the development of new industrial techniques, novel equipment and processing technologies, creation of methods for optimized industrial design, control and renovation of chemical engineering systems.
The applied projects are developed on laboratory and pilot plant scale by designing and testing of suitable novel equipment, wide range of processes occurring in gas, liquid or solid media, in chemical or biochemical reactors, etc. The laboratory experience offers a possibility to derive quantitative relationships required for the scaling-up of the laboratory results for industrial conditions.
Training of students and postgraduates
The highly qualified staff of the IChE participates in the training of students attending the chemical engineering and bioengineering. Students from various universities in the country carry out their R&D practice and prepare their theses under the supervision of the IChE staff. IChE specialists deliver lectures for students in the University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy, Sofia, and the University “Prof. Dr. Assen Zlatarov”, Burgas. Also the IChE has an agreement with the University of Food Technology, Plovdiv. The IChE is a centre for post-graduates training from the country and abroad. There are many Ph.D. students preparing their theses.
The Institute of Chemical Engineering organizes regularly International Summer School on Heat and Mass Transfer, Chemical and Biochemical Reactors. Recognized scientists from Germany, Russia, France, Canada, Belgium, etc. are invited for lectures. |
